An event that marked history
The Hall of the Battle of Campaldino is one of the most symbolic rooms of Poppi Castle and represents the final point of the permanent museum exhibition “Inferno a Campaldino”, set up in the three rooms on the noble floor.
These spaces are dedicated to one of the most important clashes of the Tuscan Middle Ages, an event that had decisive consequences for the political balance of the region and for the fate of the Casentino.
The rooms do not simply commemorate a battle; rather, they invite visitors to understand the historical context, the forces involved, and the political and cultural significance of a confrontation that profoundly shaped the history of medieval Tuscany.
Battle of Campaldino · 1289
The Battle of Campaldino was fought on 11 June 1289, on the plain below Poppi, between the Guelph troops of Florence and the Ghibelline troops of Arezzo. The battle ended with a clear victory for the Guelphs, marking a crucial shift in the balance of power in central Tuscany.
The Arezzo defeat marked the definitive decline of Ghibelline influence in the area, while Florence consolidated its dominant role. Casentino, and Poppi in particular, thus found itself at the center of a phase of profound political and institutional transformation.
Dante and Campaldino
Among the Florentine soldiers was Dante Alighieri, then a young knight on horseback. His direct participation makes Campaldino a central episode not only in military history, but also in Italian cultural memory.
The experience of the battlefield left a profound impression on Dante. The chaos of the conflict, the violence of combat, and the fragility of human life resurface in several passages of the Divine Comedy, where the poet conveys images of war, fear, and disorientation with a force that is still extraordinary today.
A space of memory
The Hall of the Battle of Campaldino is designed as a place of historical remembrance. The simple and restrained layout helps visitors understand the symbolic significance of the event, encouraging a reading that goes beyond a simple military narrative.
Inside the room there is a model of the battle, which allows you to visualize the disposition of the troops, the territory and the main phases of the battle, making it easier to understand a complex event.
The Castle and the territory
At the time of the battle, Poppi Castle was one of the main centers of power of the Conti Guidi, a family that played a central role in the political dynamics of Casentino and medieval Tuscany.
The room helps us understand the profound connection between the castle, the territory, and the historical events that shaped its destiny. Campaldino was not an isolated episode, but part of a broader system of alliances, conflicts, and strategies that directly involved Poppi and its castle.
