The spaces of power and representation tell a fundamental part of its history:

/State rooms/

The State Rooms of Poppi Castle tell a fundamental part of its history: that of government, administration, and territorial management. Here, the castle manifests itself not as a fortress or place of worship, but as the decision-making and political center of Casentino.

These rooms were intended to host meetings, assemblies, and administrative activities, representing the castle’s public and official face.

A castle that governs

For many centuries, Poppi Castle was the main center of power in Casentino. Here, the Conti Guidi exercised control over the territory, administering justice, managing assets, and regulating political relations with neighboring cities.

The Ballroom was the place where prominent figures were welcomed and where the Count displayed his magnificence. Administrative decisions and official acts took place within the present-day Rilliana Library.

Architecture and function

The Institutional Halls are characterized by large, understated spaces, designed to accommodate public and representative functions. The architecture reflects the need to convey stability, authority, and control, fundamental values for a place of government.

The layout of the rooms and their proportions suggest a practical and continuous use, designed to host meetings, assemblies, and administrative activities.

Places of meeting and decision-making

These rooms were not static spaces, but places traversed daily by officials, representatives, and messengers. Fiscal, territorial, and political issues affecting the entire Casentino were discussed here.

The Institutional Rooms witnessed crucial moments in the life of the area, becoming the point where decisions directly influenced the fate of the village and surrounding communities.

Continuity and transformation

As the centuries passed and political structures changed, the Institutional Halls changed function, adapting to new administrative needs. While losing their role as a feudal center, these rooms continued to be used as official and representative spaces.

This ability to transform without losing their identity makes the halls a tangible testimony to the castle’s evolution over time, from a medieval residence of power to a historical and cultural complex.

The Institutional Halls today

Today, the Ballroom retains an institutional function as the City Council meets here. Civil weddings are also celebrated in this room, as are conventions, conferences, and cultural activities.
