The State Rooms of Poppi Castle tell a fundamental part of its history: that of government, administration, and territorial management. Here, the castle manifests itself not as a fortress or place of worship, but as the decision-making and political center of Casentino.
These rooms were intended to host meetings, assemblies, and administrative activities, representing the castle’s public and official face.
A castle that governs
For many centuries, Poppi Castle was the main center of power in Casentino. Here, the Conti Guidi exercised control over the territory, administering justice, managing assets, and regulating political relations with neighboring cities.
The Ballroom was the place where prominent figures were welcomed and where the Count displayed his magnificence. Administrative decisions and official acts took place within the present-day Rilliana Library.
- Curiosity: In this room, Francesco Conti Guidi signed the surrender and transfer of the Poppi Castle to Florence in 1440. The Guidi era ended.
Architecture and function

The Institutional Halls today
Today, the Ballroom retains an institutional function as the City Council meets here. Civil weddings are also celebrated in this room, as are conventions, conferences, and cultural activities.
