Castello di Poppi

The Castle

/Castle of the Conti Guidi/

Historical symbol of Casentino

Poppi Castle, also known as the Castle of the Counts Guidi, has dominated the village and the Casentino Valley for over seven centuries. Its strategically chosen elevated position allowed for visual control of the entire valley and the main connecting roads, making it one of the most important strongholds of the area’s medieval defense system.

Built as a military fortress and stately residence, the castle is one of the best-preserved examples of medieval architecture in Tuscany. Its grandeur is not only functional for defense: the complex was designed to visually assert the power of the Conti Guidi family, who made it one of the main centers of their territorial dominion.

The building assumed its current form between the late XIII and early XIV centuries, with a compact, austere, and highly recognizable structure, inspired by the models of Florentine civil architecture of the time. Despite numerous subsequent interventions, the castle has retained its original layout over time, maintaining its architectural identity intact.

An architecture designed to last

The complex is surrounded by walls with Guelph battlements and a moat, elements that underscore its defensive function. The main entrance, deliberately off-axis with respect to the façade, was designed to slow down potential attacks and is protected by an advanced structure, known as a munition, which housed the drawbridge.

Inside, the central courtyard is one of the castle’s most evocative spaces. It features architectural elements of great interest, such as the Turriani Staircase, wooden galleries, remains of decorated ceilings, and a unique eccentric column supporting the roof. Towering over the entire complex is the tall tower, remodeled in the XIX century, which continues to be one of the most recognizable landmarks of Poppi’s skyline.

The interiors preserve traces of the castle’s daily and institutional life over the centuries: frescoes, coats of arms of the Florentine Vicars, monumental fireplaces, furnishings, and the chapel decorated with pictorial cycles attributed to Taddeo Gaddi, a pupil of Giotto.

The Castle today

Today, Poppi Castle is a place open to the community and visitors, a space for understanding, preserving, and promoting its historical and architectural heritage.
